The Wood Guys
The Wood Guys 2014
On February 26 ten of our members and their friends journeyed out to Oberon to visit The Wood Guys, a small concern that has new and recycled timber. The usual pickup of the Great Western Highway were successful we sallied forth to stop at the nursery at Mount Boyce in the cafe there. Refreshed after coffee, scones and banana bread we rolled down Mount Victoria Pass and on towards Oberon and Jenolan caves.
Kilometres later, as our fearless navigator President(Phil T) and Vice President driver(Ray B) consulted a Google map printout we checked out the main street of Oberon and then decided it was best to phone The Wood Guys for further directions. We had driven right past their entrance and had to backtrack 9 km to find a small numbered sign that led us to our destination. The Wood Guys is run by John and his daughter Holly.
We had a very short safety talk warning us about trip hazards, spiders, snakes and sundry other things before we started to go through the piles and stacks of miscellaneous timbers, offcuts and slabs. As usual the 'bower-birds' started immediately going through the many stacks as we were shown each one. We all seemed to find a little piece that was just right for whatever 'project' as the Americans would say. John continued to offer us excellent prices( in his wonderful white chalk) and discussion about the origin of each particular piece of timber that we were interested in. Some time later Holly and her son had set out the BBQ( Frank and Tom kept an eye on this) and a range of slices, pastas, chicken, potatoes salads and sausages. After feasting on these yummies and the chaser kebabs the raffle was drawn for the small tool kit, wood drills and the usual Tawny Port.
With our wallets empty, the bus floor loaded with timber of all shapes and sizes and our stomachs full to bursting we left The Wood Guys promising to return in the near future. An excellent day for club members and their friends. A big thank you to John and Holly for their hospitality and excellent wood prices.
